In Memoriam: Professor Antônio Galvão Naclério Novaes (1935–2025)
It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Professor Antônio Galvão Naclério Novaes, who departed this Thursday, December 18, 2025, in Assis, São Paulo, at the age of 90. A native of São Paulo, Professor Novaes is survived by his wife and three daughters, leaving an indelible legacy that has fundamentally shaped the landscape of Brazilian engineering.
Widely revered as the “Father of Logistics in Brazil,” Professor Novaes’s academic career was nothing short of distinguished. He held the position of Full Professor at the University of São Paulo’s Polytechnic School (USP) and served as a prominent faculty member at the Federal University of Santa Catarina’s (UFSC) Department of Production and Systems Engineering from 1992 to 2005. Most recently, he shared his vast expertise as a visiting professor at the University of Campinas (Unicamp). His prolific scholarly output includes dozens of seminal books that remain the gold standard for transportation, logistics, and supply chain management education in Brazil.
Professor Mônica M. M. Luna, Coordinator of Production Engineering at UFSC, reflected on both his professional brilliance and his personal warmth:
“A visionary who pioneered modern logistics in Brazil, Professor Novaes possessed a rare ability to bridge the gap between academic rigor and market practice. Beyond his invaluable contributions as a consultant and author, he was known for his deeply compassionate, welcoming, and joyful spirit. He will be profoundly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing him.”
The Department of Production and Systems Engineering, alongside the broader academic community, extends its deepest condolences and solidarity to his family and friends during this time of loss.
